Gear up everyone. It’s Thanksgiving season and the generational battles are gonna be in full swing this year.

Here’s the story of how it’s merely Tuesday evening and I’m already over it all*.

*I do love my family
Tonight we celebrated thanksgiving by having dinner with my mom’s mom and her husband. As we finished eating, I mentioned a meme that was topical to our current discussion. My grandma asked what a meme was so I explained the best I could. That’s when it went down hill... 2/9
My 87yr old step-grandfather has become exponentially more grouchy as the years have gone by. I always try to just ignore his ramblings, but when he began to say that memes were harmful to society, I had to say something. 3/9
I politely tried to explain that memes are just a modern version of political comics that were published all while he was growing up. He clearly didn’t like that answer. My grandma tried to shift the discussion off of that by asking what hashtags were. That was a big mistake. 4/9
As I tried to explain the concept of hashtags to her, he decides to jump back in and rant about how stupid hashtags are and said all we (non boomers) do is take words and ruin their meaning. 5/9
I politely proposed the thought that language is constantly changing and words have gained different meanings all through time. He shook his head in disgust, leaned back in his chair, and said “y’all have DESTROYED the English language” 6/9
I was baffled. There was obviously no reasoning with him. My poor grandma wants it calm, but she knows he’s being ridiculous. He keeps staring me down waiting for me to react.
I look back with a smile and calmly say the only thing possible in the moment 7/9
ok boomer.

And that’s how dinner ended. I was polite as I was leaving so all is good now. Sure I probably should’ve just let it go, but it’s insane to have a generation that has a superiority complex that goes unchecked. Keep it as respectful as possible, but know when enough is enough. 9/9
