1. An #Ebola-by-the-numbers thread about where things have gotten to with the DRC outbreak & why huge gains are now at risk.
First numbers: 1 & 0, the number of cases & deaths reported Monday.
Are they true? Recent trends suggest maybe but impossible to know right now.
2. Second number: 59, the number of doses of the Merck #Ebola vaccine used Monday. 963 doses have been administered in the past week. A few months ago, that many were given in a day.
Part of the decline is that there are fewer cases=fewer contacts. But access likely also a factor
3. Third number: 7, the total #Ebola cases in the past week.
This is heartbreaking. The outbreak is finally, finally being wrestled to the ground. But the violence at Beni could threaten the hard-won progress. After being cleared for a second? third? time, Ebola is back in Beni
4. The fourth & fifth numbers: 260 & 28.
The weekly @WHOAFRO #Ebola updates always list the number of cases in the past 21 days. In July-Aug — not the outbreak peak — there were 260 cases in a 3-week period. From Nov. 4-24, there were 28.
So. Much. Progress.
Now. In. Peril.
