Teams, coaches and managers lament the "$4 million" & "4 imports" in relation to the Sydney Kings. But right now, they are the most exciting aspect of #NBL20 . There's a reason Xavier Cooks signs with the Kings. It isn't moneyđź’°. They have a clear plan for their organisation.
They sell that plan to their coaches, their staff and their players. Tate recognises he can learn from Andrew Bogut, one of the great modern day centres in the world. He understands Will Weaver is a brilliant tactical mind with NBA connections that can springboard his career.
They understand and exploit the advantages of being a "start-up"/newly reinvented league. When you are trying to grow your organisation, yes, it has to be commercially viable, but you also have to be brave, bold and prepared to take risks at every level of the organisation.
The Kings don't worry about the opposition (besides scouting, obviously). Their focus is on themselves and growing their ever expanding footprint in Sydney, which has always been a problematic sporting market.
My hope is that people look at the Sydney Kings, the Perth Wildcats and Melbourne United and recognise that this is what Australian basketball can be. This is what other teams can be. And rather than collapse in a heap, strive to better their own organisation.
