My local Tory MP, @MelJStride, is trying to fool his constituents with the figures on his leaflet. Sadly for him, not all of his constituents can be so easily deceived. Here’s a breakdown of what these figures actually mean and why we should #GetJohnsonGone: (1/8)
Firstly, my fave one - the figures for my beloved NHS. These values mean nothing when we consider inflation (£117bn in 2010 = £147bn in 2018). So, we'd be £8bn worse off; this doesn’t even give any leeway for growth in service demand with a rising and ageing population. (2/8)
Secondly, the current minimum wage of £8.21, shown in this document, is too low and paltry; especially in comparison to Labour’s £10 promise. There is nothing in the Conservative Manifesto saying that min. wage will be raised under Tories. Using old figures means nothing. (3/8)
Thirdly, the difference shown in unemployment stats is, in realistic terms, not as large as suggested. Since 2010, the % of people on 0-hr contracts (a Tory trick) has risen vastly. If we account for this, there is no statistical significance between 2010 and 2018 figures. (4/8)
Fourthly, the greenhouse gas figure of 449 (MtCO2e) is for 2018, not 2019. Anyway, misinformation aside, the period of the accelerating reduction in emissions was during the Labour gov., with the highest reduction in their final year. Since Tories, it's been decelerating. (5/8)
Fifthly, my good friend, inflation, comes back to haunt our Tory friend's figures again; the 'per-pupil school funding' does not account for inflation. £3842 in 2010 = £4839.20 in 2018. Tories pledge £4363: a real-time loss of £476 per pupil. Nothing to boast about tbh. (6/8)
Finally, the annual deficit. This was a worldwide problem due to the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, started by the USA and their mortgage market. Not much to do with Labour tbh - more to do with the Tories' rich banker pals and their terrible, greedy decisions. (7/8)
I guess, when we put this all together, it reminds me why we should never trust a Tory. Our mid-Devon candidate is no different - all I see is lies on their leaflet. I haven't even factored in what the Tories have done to NHS services in Devon but that's for another thread! (8/8)
