THREAD: HOW TO FIX THE GIANTS
The first step in any plan to rebuild the Giants includes trying to figure out what exactly happens to the head coach and GM. I personally think Shurmur will be fired, but Gettleman will remain as GM. I DONT want that to happen. I would replace both.
Who would be the potential replacements? For HC:
KC OC Eric Bienemy
BAL OC Greg Roman
Baylor HC Matt Rhule
SF DC Rob Saleh
NE OC Josh McDaniels
NE DC Steve Belicheck
DAL DC Kris Richard
MIN OC Kevin Stefanski
DAL HC Jason Garrett
For GM:
ESPN Louis Riddick
IND Ed Dodds
NE Nick Caserio
NYG Kevin Abrams
NFLN Daniel Jeremiah
DAL Will McClay
I personally think the Giants are doomed to be a Kevin Abrams GM/Jason Garrett HC team. My personal choice? I think Eric Bienemy could really unleash this team’s offense. For GM, I’d pick Ed Dodds. He helped create Seattle’s SB team and is Chris Ballard’s top exec.
Now with that done, let’s take a look at our cap space. Assuming the salary cap is at $200 million, the Giants would currently be 12th in the NFL in cap space with $61.4 million. Let’s make some cuts, because we can do better.
First, the easy cuts. I am cutting Rhett Ellison, Kareem Martin, Spencer Pulley, and Antoine Bethea. Too little impact, too much money. That gives us about $15 million in cap space.
Do we want to go really nutty with this? Alec Ogletree is not a bad player, but he has a horrific contract. He has the 7th highest contract for ILBs. The guys above? Wagner, Mosley, Myles Jack, Deion Jones, Jaylon Smith. He’s not on their level. Saves us $8.5 mill to cut him.
Janoris Jenkins is a good player. We’ve really invested a ton into CB, though. He will cost us $11.25 mill to keep. I think it’s time we move on. He’s been inconsistent, and that money could go elsewhere.
Finally, Nate Solder, is the last player I’m cutting. We eat $13 mill in dead cap to do so but he’s allowed 9 sacks and NYG is 32nd in the league in running to the left per Football Outsiders. Modest savings of $6.5 mill, but you do it.
That’s all I’d cut. It’d bring our total cap space to $102.68 million. That’s a hefty sum of money but I blew up some big holes in the team. Let’s go and use some money. First, let’s re-sign some of our own free agents.
Leonard Williams will be a Giant. We gave up too much and he’s got leverage. I don’t want to sign him to this large of a contract, but this is how much he’ll likely cost. We sign him to a 4 year deal worth $39,000,000 with $15 mill gtd and $10 mill signing bonus.
The only other player that I’d re-sign is Riley Dixon for 3 years, $7.6 million dollars with a $2 mill signing bonus. What about Markus Golden, you ask? Well, I think I want to go bigger.
Shaq Barrett is the prize of FA, but the Giants will be outbid. I’m going to gun for Yannick Ngakoue from Jacksonville. It will take a lot. A LOT. 6 years, $109 million with $45 mill guaranteed.
That may seem like a lot for Ngakoue, but it actually slots right behind what Frank Clark and Demarcus Lawrence got paid. He goes right behind them and right in front of Zadarius Smith in Green Bay.
The other “big name” that I’d go for is Jack Conklin, offensive tackle from Tennessee. Some injury issues, some performance issues, but I do think he’d help out in the run game. 5 years, $51.5 million with $22 mill guaranteed.
After getting rid of Alec Ogletree, I’m going to replace him with another LB from the Rams. Cory Littleton. Going to be costly as well, but will really help the team inside. Let’s go 5 years, $79 million with $28 mill guaranteed. Slots between CJ Mosley and Myles Jack
A CB I’m targeting in FA won’t be as expensive at the top end. It would be Mackensie Alexander, who’s pretty decent in the slot. Had an injured elbow this year. Would sign him for 2 years, $19 million as a sort of prove it deal.
All of those drop us down to $36.6 million in space. We do have room to sign other players, but for now, this is enough. The rest of the roster should fill out with other re-signings and small contracts. Take out $10 mill for that, and you’d still have 25 mill+.
Time for the draft. I’m going to simulate the Giants having 8 picks, one in each round with an extra 7th comp. The 3rd round pick would be the almost guaranteed compensatory pick the Giants would get for Landon Collins. Here we go:
Round 1: Chase Young, EDGE OSU. My top player on the board and one of the best EDGE prospects to come out since Myles Garrett. He’s a franchise cornerstone and imagine the insanity pairing him up with Yannick Ngakoue.
Round 2: Jedrick Willis, OT ALA. A very strong player at the point of attack. Footwork is not his strong suit, but he can blast people off the ball and could very well be a good road grader on the left side. Will definitely help the run blocking.
Round 3 (Trade Up): Nick Harris, OC WASH. Giants trade away their 6th round pick and comp 7th rounder to move up to nab him. Your starting center. Undersized, but really great movement ability. Reminds me a bit of Rodney Hudson.
Round 4: Jordyn Brooks, LB TTU. A fierce leader at ILB for the Red Raiders, he’s very well built and is a really good downhill player. Kind of plays like BJ Goodson, but he’ll also play special teams.
Round 5: Antonio Gandy-Golden, WR Liberty. Jump Ball specialist at 6-foot-4 and with nasty good hands. Does not get elite separation nor does he great acceleration but it’s a shot in the dark to get Daniel Jones a legit jump ball target in the red zone.
Round 7: Luke Farrell, TE OSU. We got rid of Rhett Ellison, we need to develop a blocking tight end that’s got some wiggle in the pass game. Farrell is pretty accomplished as a blocker and has a chance to develop.
That's all I got! I'd probably also sign guys like Jon Halapio and Michael Thomas to smaller deals, but those deals likely won't effect our cap space tremendously.
