seen some lgbt people on twitter say that they dont like the word 'queer' because it is used as a slur. fair enough, they have the right to be uncomfortable with it because of this, but i identify the most with this word because of how its used as an umbrella term..
im in that awkward space of being not bisexual but not quite lesbian - mostly attracted to girls and very rarely guys, & that doesnt have a term at all. its awful to feel like im on a weird spot on a spectrum. which is why i say im 'gay' or 'queer' to make things easier..
having a word that implies i lean more towards being gay without direct words like 'bi' or 'les' is the best i can describe myself without sounding like im complicated. im conflicted about how this feels daily, i dont want anyone else the responsibility of figuring it out too..
tho it can be awkward for others who know queer as a slur, its personally empowering to me to reclaim a word that is used to generalise gays, and to transform it to generalise my gayness simply and without complications. its the closest to genuinely defining my sexuality..
so yea, people can choose not to use queer for personal reasons, understandably so as it has had a nasty history, but i can also choose not to give up the right to belong to the category of an unidentifiable gay
