#ShakeAlert has several USGS funded social science projects organized by researchers from the US and New Zealand. This work will help us better understand risk perception, protective action knowledge, and basic preparedness across the ShakeAlert System. (2/10)
Dr. Jeannette Sutton @universityofky @uk_ci & Dr. Michele Wood @CSUF are investigating public response to #ShakeAlert during the Ridgecrest, CA earthquakes in July. They are doing a survey inside and outside the impacted area. (3/10) @ECA @ShakeOut
. @HazCenter @CUBoulder Dr. Lori Peek and her team are studying the experiences of school administrators during the 2018 Anchorage, AK and 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes with a goal to learn how to best apply #ShakeAlert in schools across the West Coast. (4/10)
What do West Coast residents think about #ShakeAlert? We want to know too! Dr. Ann Bostrom @UW @evansschool leads an international team with investigators from @MasseyU who will conduct this critical baseline survey so we can understand long-term impacts of EEW. (5/10)
Then we have Dr. Elizabeth Reddy @beth_reddy at the @coschoolofmines who is exploring how the #ShakeAlert was created, has developed, is evolving, and how the science teams integrate across different disciplines. Her findings will help optimize ShakeAlert operations. (6/10)
We then have Dr. Dare Baldwin at @uoregon with the help of Dr. Sara McBride, USGS @disatrouscomms, analyzing human behavior during earthquakes through video footage of the Anchorage and Ridgecrest earthquakes with a goal to improve education and training for #ShakeAlert. (7/10)
Finally, @disastrouscomms leads an analysis of #ShakeAlert media and social media for the Ridgecrest earthquakes to improve and optimize communication about EEW before and after earthquakes. (8/10)
What do all of these projects have in common? They all address critical questions that focus on the most important part of the ShakeAlert System – keeping people safe. (9/10)
@OregonOEM, @Cal_OES, @waEMD
So that's our rundown on what’s going on in Social Science with the #ShakeAlert System. Stand by for updates on these projects. Also, please send @distrastrouscomms some coffee, she’s the ShakeAlert Social Science coordinator and she’ll need it! (10/10)
