Someone stole my wallet last week. I lost everything. They went shopping on Karma Loop (yes that still exists) and bought like $60 worth of food at a restaurant. In a moment of frustration I weighed filing a police report. In the end I decided not to, here’s why
I don’t like the police. At all. I don’t support or believe in our way of policing. Filing a police report would mean participating in a system I vehemently disagree with.
From the charges on my card I concluded it was a young kid on the south side who had likely come across my wallet (I think our fell out of my purse) and thought he had come up. I didn’t want to be the reason a young person had a criminal record. He bought chicken and shoes
He was being a “teen.” Stealing is wrong but white kids get to make mistakes as children and our kids do not. I will never contribute to continuing this notion
I went back and forth, man I really wanted my wallet back. Then I had to realize. My wallet wasn’t coming back. The police would at most find the kid (he had been actually swiping my cards so it would’ve been easy) and arrest him. At this point he probably would’ve tossed my
wallet. And at least, the cops wouldn’t even try to investigate my stoollen wallet case. Also. One must always worry as a Black person about how you’ll be treated by the cops and if they’ll end up escalating your situation on you although you are the victim
All in all. I think we all need to think a little longer when we arrive at calling the cops on someone. We need to work to undo our immediate desire for “punishment” when we’ve been wronged and learn to deal with things in other ways besides calling 12
