A thought provoked by @ThabitiAnyabwil Prophetic Politics podcast on reparations: When Job describes his doing justice in Job 29, he doesn't speak of correcting personal oppression or repenting from an injustice he brought about. His concern isn't on personal guilt.
Instead, his focus is on people whose lives are marked with circumstances that ought not be. He looks for the absence of shalom and seeks to bring flourishing to those who don't have it, regardless of whether or not he's the cause of their oppression/vulnerability.
If Christians are to engage reparations (and a host of other issues) well, our gaze needs to get off of ourselves and onto our neighbors. Culpability isn't the primary concern when restoring justice. The focus is on setting things right, restoring life as God intended.
