It is repeated over and over again that Aisha (RA) was just 6 years old when she was betrothed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and that he consummated the marriage when she was 9 years old. No one ever bothered to familiarize themselves with the history of the circumstances. . . 1/12

surrounding Prophet (SAW)’s marriage to Aisha (RA). Modern research and scholarship show that in fact that was not the case. That was the period immediate to the death of Khadija (RA). She died in 619 CE. At that time the ages of Prophet (SAW)’s children were:

Zainab (RA) 21, Ruqayya (RA) 18, Umm Kulsoom 16 and Fatima (RA) the youngest was just 4 years old. Probably the elder ones were married at that time. We have to check the dates to make sure. While this was the case, a female Companion named Khawlah bint Hakim (RA). . .

once met him on the road and she said to him that she is seeing him alone without a wife. Then Prophet asked her whether there is a suitress. She said yes, there’s a matron and also a virgin. Matron is Sawda (RA) n the virgin is Aisha (RA). Then he advised her to check. . .

on them about the possibility of marriage. First, she went and asked Aisha’s parents who said that she has already been betrothed to Jubayr ibn Mut`im (RA) but marriage not consummated yet. Jubayr later became a Muslim but his father Mut`im ibn Adiyy was a Mushrik (Pagan).

Imagine a 6-year old girl already been betrothed to someone even before the Prophet’s marriage to her? Cud it just b possible? Since it was a no from the family of Aisha (RA), she then went to Sawda n she agreed to the marriage. This was the Makkan period, before the Hijra.

In the meantime, Abubakr (RA) went n checked with the family of Jubayr, but since they were Mushriks, n since Abubakr (RA)’s family became Muslim they said they were not interested in da marriage anymore. So, that proposal became void. Since there was a proposal pending. . .

from the side of the Prophet (SAW), n now there is acceptance on the side of Aisha (RA)’s family, that means the marriage is firm. But Prophet (SAW) did not consummate the marriage. After Hijra, Abubakr (RA) came and told Prophet (SAW) that why not he now consummate the. . .

marriage with Aisha (RA). Prophet (SAW) consulted with Sawda (RA) about the marriage to Aisha (RA) n she said that she had no objection to the marriage. That is when the Prophet took Aisha (RA) as his wife. Even though betrothal was confirmed in 620 CE, consummation was. . .

3 years after that.

Imagine that there’s a small child of 4 years at home. Would the Prophet bring as wife another child who is just 6 years old to look after (Fatima (RA), and also take care of the Prophet’s personal needs and to take care of the household chores?

Such talk does not stand up to scrutiny n vud be rejected out of hand by serious academics. Arabic numbers r written like “Saadhisu wa `ishroon” (six and twenty) for twenty-six. It is the same format in German also. They’ll say “Sechs und Zwanzig” (literally, six n twenty).

Researchers opine that “ten” was perhaps omitted in Aisha (RA)’s age in the narrations. This means that the ages in question would be 16 and 19, and not 6 and 9.

Reality is that Prophet (SAW) would have married Aisha (RA) at least when she was 19 years old.
