This is probably important to only me, but I’ve identified my “10” favorite movies of the decade. And it’s probably a super unsophisticated and juvenile list, but I went off rewatchability, my theater experience, and (in some cases) general lore. Here we go:
Shoutout to Spotlight, The Social Network, Whiplash, and The Theory of Everything for being brilliant films but not super rewatchable or enjoyable for a variety of reasons. Also, as much as I love Midnight in Paris, I left it off because Woody Allen is awful.
First, my honorable mentions: Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood and Rocketman are two of my favorites this year, but I tried avoiding recency bias. Black Panther was a game changer but I already had two Marvel movies in the top ten.
Also an individual shoutout to Into the Spider-Verse. I have a hard time judging animated movies against other films, so I didn’t put it in and now I’m just making excuses, but it absolutely deserves love for so many reasons.
And now...the 10.
10. Rogue One: The only Star Wars movie on my list and probably no. 2 on my list overall behind Empire. Fantastic characters, love the connections/Easter eggs, and gobs of tension/tragedy make it brilliant.
9. Creed: I was obsessed with the Rocky movies when I was younger and this blew every single one of them out of the water, imo.
8. Skyfall: Everybody in this movie, Craig, Bardem, Judi Dench, etc., is just throwing 100 miles an hour. I’m normally not a Bond guy, but this is masterful.
I forgot the picture and now ruined the entire thread.
7. Scott Pilgrim vs the World: Infinitely quotable, so much fun, and Brandon Routh’s performance alone puts it on here.
6. Endgame: I violated the recency rule, but the theater experience alone puts this on the list. The culmination of everything the MCU established and the last hour is just incredible.
5. Mad Max Fury Road: Just masterfully put together. A two-hour chase scene that comes together perfectly and is exhilarating every single time.
4. Ragnarok: My single favorite MCU movie. Some of the most fun I’ve ever had watching a movie, and as hilarious as it is, it still maintains its weight and significance to larger concepts.
3. What We Do in the Shadows: Every second of this movie is absolutely hysterical. Taika Waititi is perfect. And the mockumentary format enhances how funny it is.
2. The Martian: Matt Damon has to carry it as the only man on a planet and he does it so well. Super rewatchable, good mix of humor and drama, and a terrific book as source material.
1. John Wick: It’s perfect and it brought Keanu back into our lives in full force.
I’m now realizing a problem with this list in that I inexplicably forgot Den of Thieves and Chef, the latter of which is in my top 10-12 favorites ever. So slot them in at 3/4 and bump everything else down.
