Academics remember that a vacation is not catch up on work time
I’m subtweeting myself
On a serious note, I'm trying to be a good example to my grad student so that he doesn't end up feeling like being a professor means existing in an unsustainable workhole.
I try really hard to set boundaries around work time that suggest that it's okay to take time off. Like, we had no meeting this week. He knows that I don't expect him to respond to e-mails on the weekend, although sometimes I will send them.
Faculty: the way students feel pressured timewise begins with the example you set. If they think to be successful like you they have to do things that make them feel like they are drowning, that's not great.
Students: keep your school and personal emails separate if you can. Don't have it all forward to gmail. I realize that was a mistake I made for a long time. Disentangling was time consuming but worth it.
Again regarding the emotional reactions about how I can’t tell you how to manage your schedule, that’s like, correct? Because it was a fucking tweet. But also remember the example you set for the people you have power over. https://twitter.com/ibjiyongi/status/1199416528032145409?s=21 https://twitter.com/ibjiyongi/status/1199416528032145409
