10 yrs ago this week I finally had the fibroid surgery I’d put off for 2 yrs. It took my life becoming damn near unmanageable for one week a month to suck it up and take the time. I fooled myself into thinking I was too busy, that work needed me, that there wasn’t time...

...to take care of my health. After recovery I was mad it took me so damn long; I didn’t realize how many different ways those buggers were wreaking havoc on my body and energy. @THEkarliehustle just posted a great thread yesterday @ the industry not encouraging balance...

I was def indoctrinated into that school of thought. You never went full no contact. Sick, well, on holidays, whatever, you work. And I felt SO GUILTY taking a whole 6 weeks off (I had one of the more invasive surgeries you can have bc of size and location of my fibroids).

But then... I realized I was TRIPPING. I drug myself through unnecessary discomfort for years... bc of work. I’ve since advocated for every woman I know who was stalling to get it done if they had the coverage to do it. Work will still be there when you get back, I promise.

My myomectomy scar is the only scar in my whole life that formed a keloid. That used to stress me out (bc vanity and bikini lines), but now I let it rock as a reminder that my body and I are in this together.

If you’re struggling with fibroids, talk to the women you know - especially BW. You’ll be surprised how many of us have been through this already, and most of us are happy to share our journeys. Take the time to take care of yourself. Nothing in your life will stop.

Fear was part of my struggle, too. It was my first major surgery; super intimidating. At the time I was lucky to find a forum @ fibroid surgeries & myomectomies, and for years I shared my prep tips and hospital packing list. Procedures have advanced now.
