Pilgrim in the Microworld (1983) by David Sudnow is very likely the first book-length video game deep dive.

It's all about the author's attempt to master Breakout for the Atari 2600. It was written just before the Atari crash, and it was way ahead of its time.
It was @BRKeogh who first turned me onto the book. After I read it, I reached out to the author's widow to see if she was open to putting out a new edition. She thankfully was, but for many months we couldn't figure out just who owned the rights to the book.
The original publisher no longer existed but had been bought out. Finally, the large publisher directed me to their rights lawyer, who after a few of my emails finally confirmed that the rights had reverted to the author's estate.
We signed a contract with David's wife, Wendy, and I wrote a new foreword to the book to give a little more context to the game Breakout, the author, and to how the book was originally received back when video games were considered a fad.
Mike ( @theunfakempw) and I decided not to mess with the content of the book, but did give it a fresh copyedit thanks to @RyanMPlummer, proofreading ( @JoeMOwens and @SweeneyNicholas), and really nice new layout ( @iamchrismoyer) with most old images intact & a few redone.
Finally @CorySchmitz came on to deliver another great cover.
We decided to fund this book on its own because (1) it's different than our other books, and (2) it's actually ready now! Like we've already submitted files to the printers. We just need your help making it a reality.

After Breakout comes our Postal book -- update coming soon!
I also wanted to thank @Unseen64 for generously offering up free ebooks for our stretch goals.

If we hit certain goals, you'll get to read about the great N64 and Playstation games that never were.
