Did Sargent commission this article for the @washingtonpost from Bezos?!? The "conservative in a Midwest diner" approach to outlier library patrons is so blatantly skewed it's comical. #EbooksForAll https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/11/26/e-books-libraries-are-huge-hit-leading-long-waits-reader-hacks-worried-publishers/
So much mainstream coverage of libraries and ebooks misleadingly centers an outlier patron gaming the system that Sargent has used as one of his main arguments to support Macmillan's embargo. Anecdata thrives when there's no commitment to transparency. #cmonson
Re-reading this article, I still can't understand why they chose to spotlight outlier user behavior as its hook; never question *WHY* someone might use libraries this way; and buried the lede that even this questionable behavior drives sales. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/11/26/e-books-libraries-are-huge-hit-leading-long-waits-reader-hacks-worried-publishers/
There's a much more interesting and productive story here about how library discovery and consumer sales can work together, but instead WaPo went with a lazy Mashable tech hack angle?
This is a very good thread, articulating several thoughts much better than I'm able to this morning. https://twitter.com/kidsilkhaze/status/1199687785147273216
