Really important thread here. It is deeply worrying how so many fellow Labour voters have been reacting to the Chief Rabbi’s remarks. People *should* vote Labour but not because antisemitism isn’t a huge problem in Labour (IT IS). https://twitter.com/therubykid/status/1199266334888083459
Nor is it, as so many well-meaning people I know are implicitly saying, because people should just briefly forget that Labour has an antisemitism problem and just vote Labour anyway because antisemitism isn't as important as other issues or getting rid of the Tories.
The fight against antisemitism is a fight we should be having, inside the labour movement & outside it, both NOW and after the election, whatever the result. Whether the Chief Rabbi is left-wing or not is so irrelevant, it's clear he's pointing out a view which is very prevalent.
It is both wrong on principle to tell Jews who are worried about a Labour government to just ignore their fears for a bit and just focus on getting rid of the Tories (and then inevitably blame them if the Tories aren’t kicked out, in other words, respond with more antisemitism)..
and it’s also completely ineffective in allaying fears if Jews are told they are being troublesome by not ignoring their fears, or worse if they’re being told they’re just making it all up.
I’m still voting Labour and canvassing so others do so too but not because I want everyone to forget the antisemitism issue, precisely the opposite. Read Daniel's thread https://twitter.com/therubykid/status/1199266334888083459
