I hate applying for things. For some, it’s fear of rejection; for me, it’s fear of putting deliberate, focused energy and effort into something that most likely will be judged arbitrarily.
I haven’t even read the feedback for the last couple of rejections because the last one I read fundamentally misread an important part of the project. They were “deeply offended” about something because they somehow missed the five previous sentences.
I don’t know about you, but if I feel deeply offended, I re-read to make sure I’ve read it correctly. Another just didn’t like the citational politics and that’s fine. Gotta man the gate, as it were.
There was even arbitrary praise
“she’s great and qualified and who cares what she’s doing she’s awesome” is lovely to hear but also ... that’s probably why they sought balance. Ha.
