I hate applying for things. For some, it’s fear of rejection; for me, it’s fear of putting deliberate, focused energy and effort into something that most likely will be judged arbitrarily.
I haven’t even read the feedback for the last couple of rejections because the last one I read fundamentally misread an important part of the project. They were “deeply offended” about something because they somehow missed the five previous sentences.
I don’t know about you, but if I feel deeply offended, I re-read to make sure I’ve read it correctly. Another just didn’t like the citational politics and that’s fine. Gotta man the gate, as it were.
There was even arbitrary praise 😝 “she’s great and qualified and who cares what she’s doing she’s awesome” is lovely to hear but also ... that’s probably why they sought balance. Ha.
