A few observations about our - that's non-Muslim Brits - attitudes to Islam. 1/
There is a huge degree of ignorance about what Muslims believe and this is not helped by the more barbaric practices of Muslim majority countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia. But most Muslims...
...in Britain are just ordinary people who want to go about their ordinary lives just as the rest of us do. This is fine until you realise the scale of anti-Muslim attitudes and discrimination with accompanying abuse. Too many people see...
...the blessedly rare terrorist attacks and place all Muslims (but especially more religious ones) in the same category. Terms like "invader" are used alongside phrases like "London has fallen" that act to encourage the abuse and violence directed to Muslims and especially women
There are repeated - and ignorant - claims about Muslims breeding so as to become the majority. This is rubbish but still gets rolled out.

Every example of wrongdoing by a Muslim gets badged as such even if it has nothing to do with the persons faith or race.
As a Conservative I believe we should spend more time understanding that the core Muslim cultural ideals - family, duty, justice, community - are close to ours. Yet...
...too many of our members and supporters believe the lies from the likes of David Vance, Katie Hopkins and Tommy Robinson. The Party does not embrace these lies but does too little to condemn them and too little to stand with Muslims faced with prejudice and abuse
I don't think my Party is institutionally anti-Muslim but we do need to set out clearly to members and especially to those seeking election at every level what standards we expect and that the endorsement or promotion of anti-Muslim sentiments should receive zero tolerance.
As we saw with that lovely young lady on the tube, Muslims are likely to be caring, thoughtful and protective of their neighbours. This, is my experience of 24 years in Bradford - home to Britain's biggest Muslim community - I simply do not see what the racist anti-Muslim see.
I've probably said enough here. There are things the Muslim community could to to help us (rather than shouting racist) but mostly it's down to us to realise those Muslims are just a bunch of people - and as diverse as the rest of society.
