Sunday afternoon, I was arrested during a demonstration in Graham, NC. I was released with a written promise to appear in the new year. #thread

I was in Graham joining friends and neighbors in calling for an end to the $2.3 million contract between Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson and ICE, and to draw attention to the presence of an ICE detention facility right in our backyard.

Johnson and his ilk are capitalizing on the United States’s racist immigration system and profiting from locking people in cages on ICE’s behalf hundreds of miles from the border.

It was powerful to sit shiva with my Jewish comrades and with immigrant organizers and allies from across North Carolina as we remembered those killed by ICE.

There are Grahams all over this country - small towns that are being increasingly incorporated into the prison industrial complex and building violent economies around locking people up. This is certainly the case in West Virginia, where I grew up.

It is all of our responsibility to reject these racist projects and the politicians who use them to score points while ruining people’s lives. Don’t let them try to hide their dirty work in our communities.
