When my clients went to the local police to find a complaint, instead of arresting the gang members responsible for extorting my clients, the police leaked the fact that my clients had filed a criminal complaint against the gang to the gang.

Unsurprisingly, a few weeks later, while my clients were waiting at a stop sign in a major Honduran city, their car was riddled with bullets in a drive by shooting. Two infants were in the car along with their mother and father. The gang hoped to eliminate the entire family.

Thankfully, the family was able to escape (although the father was shot) and came to the USA immediately thereafter. These facts are typical for a country like Honduras which has one of the most corrupt police force on the planet.

How is Honduras supposed to protect citizens from other countries when they aren’t even willing to protect their own? These are the conditions we are sending asylum seekers back to and people will die as a result.
