In high schools I had a 2.8GPA and never took the SAT. I was unmotivated and distracted. I had no dedicated time and no resources. I was working jobs in high school and hanging out. /2
I had a 3.9 at community college. I was motivated, undistracted, had dedicated time and resources (thank you math lab tutoring!). I was working in a research lab and surrounded by students. The perfect culture for bacteria to grow! /3
I had a 3.2 at UC Berkeley. A single A grade in all my upper division courses. I was motivated, undistracted, had dedicated time but no resources. I was working in a lab far away from
campus and felt isolated on campus as one of few Latinos. /4
I had a 246 on Step 1. I was motivated, undistracted, had dedicated time and resources. I was supported and my school and part of a community. I had everyone telling me I could do it. /5
I matched into plastic and reconstructive surgery. I was motivated, undistracted, had dedicated time and resources. I did well on the inservice tests in residency only when I had dedicated time to study. I was supported and felt to be part of a community. /6
Many students can be missing something above out of their control. Life and socioeconomic status happen. You have to find a way for it to work out but sometimes you can’t blame yourself if it doesn’t. Find a mentor. Find real life guidance to help you see what you cannot. /7
