Genuinely not sure the extent to which male colleagues/university admins realize that female profs deal with students that have been sexually assaulted or have eating disorders. We are not trained, and there is a shortage of counselling spaces. #academia https://twitter.com/fgenovese86/status/1199253450112086016
I want the students to come forward and ask for help. I want to help them. But I know I am not a trained counsellor. I know they will struggle to find qualified help. And, if I am honest, that is a hard position to be in: to know someone needs help and it may not be there.
This is not about “poor me, the prof” - it is about universities that have increased spaces but not increased mental health and counselling services. It does affect young female profs. But much much much worse I feel we are failing in a duty of care.
