Seeing lots of people point out that, if universities dock our pay for ASOS, that means that our universities are admitting that we cannot do our jobs if we work to contract within our supposed working hours. And that’s true! But it also shows how they are defining ASOS.
My university has listed our tasks in order of what they think should be priorities during ASOS. Attending a conference or a research seminar, for example, is bottom of the list. Top is ‘prioritising the current needs of students’, including taking part in rescheduled teaching.
But taking part in rescheduled teaching — making up for work we missed on the strike, for which we’ve already had pay docked — should not be something employers can force us to do. And GOOD LUCK rescheduling 8 days missed teaching, when you run universities as such high capacity!
Last strike, there was a snow day just after we returned to work. And the university immediately sent out an email saying that rescheduling classes missed on that one day would be impossible. Whilst putting heavy pressure on teaching staff to make up missed strike classes 🤔
