1. As promised

Let's talk about BEDC from the technical angle. Its a thread so please read carefully.

I will use some terms such as:
GenCos - Power Generation Companies
TCN - Transmission Company of Nigeria
DisCos - Electricity Distribution Companies
2. BEDC, IBEDC, EKEDC, IKEDC, etc fall under DisCos
Now there is a total transmitted power by the TCN and the megawatt depends on what is generated by the GenCos. The DisCos get/buy this power in units(megawatt) from TCN and then sell in bits to customers under their jurisdiction
3. Hence, whatever the DisCos get depends on what is being generated, transmitted and what they themselves demand for. its a business, so you don't request for units you know you cannot resell and make a profit.
4. From the previous earnings, you can then upscale and request for more as a DisCos. So, Discos buy from TCN..... TCN buys from GENCOS. TCN is owned and controlled by FG. Thermal station GENCOS is owned and controlled by private
Hydro station GENCOS is owned and controlled by FG
5. Like I already explained, Transmitted power is not fixed... It also depends on the generated MWH. So, generated capacity of thermal or hydro stations will always affect what is distributed to the customers. Your allocation as a TCN or Disco drops based on the total generated
6. Most times, GenCos generates say 6000MWH. Transmission depending on how their network is for the day picks up say 5000MWH ready to be transmitted
Of this 5000MWH, each Discos is entitled to a maximum statutory percentage.
7. Say Ikeja Electric (IE), of the 5000MWH, IE is entitled to 15% of this. They can't pick more than that but they can pick less than that. BEDC gets 9%. Nothing more than 9% so you see. Eko Electric gets 11%, etc for other Discos.

How did they come about the percentage?
8. Load history (the number of electricity users under that jurisdiction). Users, in this case, means what they consume. But there's a platform where each Discos sees the available MWH for them for that hour and they are expected to key in what they need

KWH - KiloWattHour
9. Most times, Discos don't accept all that's available for them at that hour due to many factors. Sometimes, why request when the previous month's sales did not go in your favour? Why request, when larger consumer databases do not pay for what they consume?
10. So if the sum of all Discos happens to be 4000MWH as against the available 5000MWH. Transmission will project to pick 4000MWH for the next hour

So a total of 2000MWH is rejected from the generated 6000MWH
And nobody pays for that 2000MWH. That's waste.
11. Discos will pay TCN for the 4000MWH picked and TCN will now pay GENCOS for 4000MWH picked. What is picked by the TCN from GenCos and DisCos from TCN depends on many factors such as

a. Reliability of the Discos network
b. Fear of non-payment by customers
12. Most times when a grid collapse is experienced, It means the Discos pick so low load hence there is over current on the grid and it will breakdown. Same as when they pick too much load than the grid can take at a point. Hence, the need for load drop.
13. Ikeja Electric which gets the highest allocation of about 15% generates revenue of about N7.2billion monthly. Let me ask, how much do you think BEDC generates monthly? Ikeja (excluding Eko) generates 7.2 billion nairas monthly.
14. So, you see this value depends on the users and the ability of customers to pay. Ikeja can request for less than 15% but they rarely do cox most high profile customers pay for what they use. Trust me, BEDC's 9% is small and some months, they request for a lesser amount.
15. It's a business venture. Someone somewhere is paying for it. If you steal or taps power from cables, someone somewhere is losing money. Also, DISCOs have their faults but I just needed to explain from the technical angle.

I hope this helps a bit.

Cheers.
Please replace KWH with MW (megawatts)
MWH to MW (megawatts). The H comes in if we analyze from the consumer side.

Apologies. Power is generated and transmitted in Megawatts
