I am probably very weird for saying this and I will probably get grilled for this but I think single mothers should get additional support at work or “special” working conditions. Let me briefly tell you why.
I’ve watched how single working mothers are portrayed in certain movies. I’ve interacted with single working moms and YES I AM also a single working mom.
As a single mom. And I mean when you are living with your children and they solely depend on you, it can be overwhelming.
It’s early mornings, making breakfast, cleaning up after the little ones, one child might be slower than the other, etc. it’s busy afternoons, picking them up from school, Sports etc. then your evenings revolve around preparing dinner, bath time homework etc.
If you have to take work from home, this can be VERY challenging because by the time it’s time to focus on your work, you are either really exhausted, anxious about deadlines or procrastinating it for the weekend.
So what happens? Either you get to work exhausted , lacking motivation or you easily underperform.
I’m not saying this happens to ALL single mothers, PLEASE understand that part!
While you as a single mother are feeling this way then your counterpart of a working mom with a husband or partner living with her MAY just be having it easier because responsibilities are shared within the household when you get home at night.
Making it easier for the other mom to come home, ready, prepared and feeling refreshed.
I really think in the working field. You absolutely can’t compare a single mom raising kids ALONE to a mom who shares responsibilities with someone else. It’s impractical in my view.
This is where I believe additional support in the workplace for single mom should come in. To make up and motivate single mothers within the workplace. To lessen workload or to divide it in such a way that it is manageable for improved performance in the team.
