In the study published in @NatureClimate, an international team of researchers examined how women’s agency contributes to climate adaptation. In social science, the agency is the ability of an individual to act independently and make meaningful choices and strategic decisions.
Through 25 case studies across Africa and Asia, the study demonstrates how environmental stress impacts women negatively. Moreover, the study identifies common conditions that depress women agency across different contexts.

The results suggest that poor working conditions for women and migration of males for work have a combined impact on women and constrain their ability to make strategic decisions when posed with any environmental stress.
The poor material conditions, either due to institutional failure or poverty, add yet another layer of constraint to women’s agency.

The study yet again highlights that in places where socio-economic conditions restrict movement, excess to resources and division of work, it is critical to ensure sustainable, equitable and effective adaptation to climate change.
The team of researchers, led by Nitya Rao, had scholars from different institutions spread across the UK, Nepal, India, Pakistan and South Africa. From India, TERI School of Advanced Studies, Hyderabad and Indian Institute for Human Settlements, Bengaluru were part of the study.
