Had stopped going to my kids school council because we've got stuff on almost every weeknight (aka I'm exhausted) but I started going again because I think it's an important time to show support and engagement. Had an interesting convo abt loss of the class size reduction grant
My kids elementary has been cut (but not really 🤔) $400,000 a year, big chunk of that loss was the class size grant which the #UCP has criticized for its failure to reduce class sizes. This has also been reported on by the media.
My kids school was built for ~500. Had ~800 until recently when *finally* a new school opened. How do you reduce class size when you don't have classroom to do it? When you're already using meeting rooms and teacher break rooms and every portable the govt will give you? You can't
Instead school administrators used this money to reduce the impact of larger than ideal class sizes in whichever way they could - more EAs for example. This funding is critical to the work our schools are doing in ensuring that our kids continue to access quality education.
The loss of the class size grant will have a tremendous impact on schools and our kids and UCP dismissing this bec no change in class sizes is wilfully ignorant (or deliberately misleading) abt how necessary these funds are to schools, regardless of what you call them.
