a thread on being a #delegate, since I have seen a ton of #YangGang being confused about this: (1)
Each state is split into congressional districts (CD). Each CD has a number of delegates. This number is based on the number of registered democrats in that district. Usually there is somewhere between 4-10 delegates per district. (2)
In order to win the democratic primary, a candidate has to receive a majority of the 4,584 delegates. Delegates are awarded to candidates based on voting results. Only candidates who receieve 15% or higher can have delgates (this may only be in NY, not sure). (3)
So how do you become a delegate? Tell the campaign you want to be one. Then they will put together a list of all the delegates for each district. Since it is possible for a candidate to win 100% of a district, the list will have the max number of delegates in that district. (4)
So for example, my district is district 8 in NY, and it has 8 delegates. Yang2020 will make a list of 8 delegates for this district. This combined list is called a slate. Once we have the slate, we have to gather signatures to get the delegates on the ballot. (5)
Depending on the size of the district, the number of signatures will vary, but it will probably be around 500. We also have to gather signatures for Andrew to be on the ballot, but this is seprate from the delegates. (6)
So as a delegate, you would help the campaign gather these signatures alongside other volunteers. The time to gather signatures is different in each state that uses this system. (7)
Depending on how many votes Andrew gets in each district, some of the delegates from that district will be asked to go to Milwaulkee to cast their vote for Andrew at the convention on July 13-16 (mon-thurs). You must be willing to travel in order to be a delegate. (8)
The travel will likely be expensive, as rooms and flights book quickly, so you should be prepared to pay $1000+ unless you can be creative in you accomodations and travel. There is also finantial aid available. (9)
If you received a text about this and want to learn more, or would like ot hear this explained out loud and not through a twitter thread, please reply yes, and they will send you an invite for an info/training session on being a delegate! (10)
And my DMs are open for anyone with questions! My only disclaimer is that I'm in NY and have a limited understanding of delegate systems outside NY. đź’™ (11)
