The same people who judge you for boundaries and having a family or personal life in the music business are the ones who wake up at 50 and realize the other side of the bed is cold and their gig is looking for the next rapper who might have an 18-month career if they’re lucky.
People think being a martyr for the music business is heroic. It’s not. It’s usually cowardice. Speaking as a former workaholic, the folks who make no time for themselves using “the grind” as an excuse are usually running from their own demons.
The industry won’t take care of you when your post-mastectomy drains need emptying. Better find a partner and some actual friends before that cancer diagnosis hits. The lifestyle ain’t healthy and lots of folks die young. Bad diet, functional alcoholism, no sleep. A whole dub.
The “you can sleep when you’re dead” types are gonna make that wish come true. Nice and early. Cuz death WILL come knocking. Oh yes. It will.
The music industry would be a better place if everyone would set some damn boundaries. If you don’t yet see yourself as worthy of them, set them on behalf of everyone else. Let’s normalize not harming ourselves for our professional careers. 2020 goals.
