America’s culture of overwork is killing us. We cannot possibly survive by trying to make up for 50 weeks of stress with 2 weeks of PTO every year. We need to develop a culture of rest. A culture of balance. We need to fight busy-ness and cultivate wellness.
We should be unplugging and have space to pause daily.

We should be intentionally resting and finding opportunities to recharge and explore weekly.

We should make our work one, among many, things we do, not who we are.
When I am asked “So what do you do?” people are flustered when I reply “I have a 9-5 that is interesting, but not all consuming. Challenging, but not stressful. And I love that.”

The thing I’m paid to do is the least interesting thing about me & tells you nothing about who I am.
It took me far too many years into my career for me to realize the person I wanted to be when I grew up was a person who is grounded with a strong sense of self, a nourishing community, curiosity and desire for exploration, and creativity.
My work alhumdulillah enables me to the live the life I want outside of work.

Regularly ask yourself “Who am I outside of my titles and degrees? Do I like that person? What have I done to care for and invest in that person today?”
America makes it so that rest is a privilege that very few are able to experience. That is wrong and inhumane. This system won’t give us space to just be and breathe, so we owe it to ourselves to find pockets of time to do that. Even if for just a few minutes each day.
We owe it to ourselves to develop a healthy relationship to and distance from our work.

Your work does not need to fully encompass who you are.

You are who you are.
Also (*whispers*)

There is no shame in wanting to make a little money. In wanting a job that gives you a good life. That enables you to care for yourself and others and that’s it.

This country does not care for its people and it’s *okay* to want to be able to care of yourself.
Y’all, I really recommend following @TheNapMinistry on here and on IG for their regular reminders to rest. They really have helped rewire how I think about my time, my pace, and my wellness.
