#Morecambe folk have received a conservative party propaganda paper masquerading as a local newspaper. I've had a read through and fact-checked some of the wilder claims in the thread below. With thanks to @FactCheck and @FullFact and shame on @davidmorrisml
1. The paper claims that the PM has secured a new Brexit deal and that we will be "ready to go from day one" of the new parliament. FACT: The UK will stop being a member of the EU if Boris Johnson’s deal goes through. But negotiations with the EU would not be complete.
The deal would be reached during a transition period, during which time the UK will still follow EU rules and pay money into the EU budget. The Brexit process will not be completed by January.
The paper claims that the 'deal' protects jobs and trade as well as environmental standards. FACT: Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement contained sections committing the UK and EU to “non-regression” in the level of environmental protection and labour standards.
These are gone from Boris Johnson’s agreement.
3. The paper claims that more people are in work and that pay is growing faster than prices. FACT: These employment statistics include people on zero hours and precarious contracts. Average wages are still below their pre-financial crisis high.
4. The paper promises 50 million extra GP appointments and a reduction in waiting times. FACT: Half the 6,000 additional doctors promised by 2024 are assumed to come from international recruitment and better retention of existing staff but
but there are no plans here on how this would be managed. GP and other healthcare professionals are quitting the NHS in record numbers because of poor pay and conditions. Brexit has made it even harder to recruit.
5. The paper promises 20,000 more police on the streets. FACT: We lost just over 20,000 police officers during austerity. This promise is about replacing those lost jobs which should never have been cut in the first place.
6. The paper claims that David Morris is working hard to bring the Eden project to Morecambe. FACT: Morris has repeatedly refused to meet with city council representatives and work with them on this project.
Most of the momentum for the project has come from investors like Lancaster University and through the work of the Labour-Green coalition on the council.
... and finally. The paper claims that Brexit is about "feeling safe when you walk home at night". This implies that citizens' safety is threatened by immigration - a shamefully racist claim.
Obviously it should go without saying that readers might ask themselves why after 9 years of government the Tories have not given us all the things they promise in this paper...?
