After refusing to recognize our union, NBC committed not to fight us or delay an election. With a massive majority of signed cards, we made it clear our expectation was the company would remain neutral in the process. Their most recent actions have that neutrality into question.
We have heard multiple reports of managers spreading inaccurate or misleading information about our union. We are disappointed that these managers have breached trust and backtracked on the company’s word.
In targeted one-on-one conversations with staff members, managers have disseminated textbook anti-union rhetoric, including false claims about dues and initiation fees, losing access to healthcare options, and impeding opportunities for job growth.
To be clear—federal labor law bars employers from threatening to withdraw benefits in response to unionizing. Negotiations begin from the “status quo.” Once our union is certified, NBC cannot make changes to our working conditions without bargaining with us first.
We call on NBC to do the right thing and at a *minimum* stop the spread of misinformation. It’s time for management to respect the overwhelming majority of the newsroom, who believe that a union will strengthen our journalism and protect the newsroom that we love.
We have seen that unionized newsrooms across the country win meaningful improvements when journalists stand strong and united. We look forward to winning our election and securing a strong contract.
