@OxfordUCU is on strike starting today. As a teaching assistant @ODID_QEH I& #39;m on strike too.
Impressive gathering on the picket line and rally on day 1 of this 8-day strike action outside the vice-chancellor& #39;s office in the Clarendon Building

@OxfordUCU voted for strike in the pay and equalities ballot
Pay:Oxford University teaching staff saw salaries decline by 17 % in real terms (retail price index)
harsh!
n.b.: workers in Oxford& #39;s 39 colleges aren& #39;t on strike cause colleges don& #39;t recognise trade unions!

@UniofOxford is among the world& #39;s richest universities; yet, over 75 per cent academic staff are on precarious short-term contracts.
This consistent chipping away at workers& #39; rights is bad not just for workers but also for the "excellence" you& #39;re trying to create here.

Apropos casualisation, @OxfordUCU has started an anti-casualisation network that met today!
At rally, Oxford Living Wage Campaign reminded striking academics abt need to build solidarities with nonteaching staff
Only 3 Oxford colleges pay a living wage;that& #39;s unacceptable!

Given Oxford& #39;s intense 8-week term,a 1.5 week-strike is a big loss. Yet, many students (including mine!) turned up in solidarity!
These are lessons you don& #39;t learn in the classroom
I& #39;ve always held that I learnt the biggest lessons of politics and life in student activism

Lastly, strikes in Oxford are very different from the ones I& #39;m used to in Kerala, or elsewhere in India. No creative/loud sloganeering, very staid banners and — most amusing to me — a & #39;picket supervisor& #39; appointed by the Union!

On the bright/fun side, the @ODID_QEH bake sale

I like the idea of a bake sale, where strikers (and supporters) contribute their labour power to bake goodies to be sold to raise funds for their Union. A part of these funds compensate wages to the lower-paid worker.

A speech at today& #39;s rally I enjoyed listening to!
Strikes are hugely educative too! So there& #39;s a series of Teach Outs in Oxford, organised by many departments. Mine ( @ODID_QEH) is doing one on Wednesday at Brasenose College (2-4 p.m.). https://twitter.com/SnehaK20/status/1198940969535754242?s=20">https://twitter.com/SnehaK20/...
