Hi! I was asked to be on an episode of @getplayedpod in a way that made me feel very tokenized. Instead of turning them down, I went on the show and confronted them about how what they did was not okay. For the impatient, The call out happens @ 23:40

This was very, very stressful for me to do. To Heather, Nick and Matt's credit, they listened and we had a real conversation about it. As lame as this was to do, they engaged in the conversation, understood where they messed up and sincerely apologized.
They even asked to bring me back on the show in the near future for a more fun episode and agreed to book Natives on the show for non tokenizing episodes. They did a lame thing, but they are very good people trying sincerely to make things right, which is awesome.
Hell, they not only released the episode, but they also gave me final edit and let me write the description which they did not have to do.

Now, here's some more details on a few things I talked about.
1. Indigenous women are murdered and go missing at an insanely high rate. It's literally called an epidemic in Canada and it is so widespread that it has its own acronym. If you want to help Natives, telling people about this is a very good start.

2. On the pod, Heather asked about if there are any good representations of Natives in media. There aren't a ton, but if you want to support us, here are some awesome Native folks making awesome shit who you should absolutely follow. (listed over next several tweets)
Cool Native Podcasters : @rebeccanagle (I called her show "Our Land" on the podcast. It's actually "This Land". Apologies!) Also @NativeApprops @janaunplgd @Nativetrailblaz @hollywoodndnz @matikawilbur
With all of that out of the way, I will now revert to this twitter account's original purpose. Posting pictures of Garfield.
Oh! One more thing. I'm very proud of being Cowlitz and I love talking about Native issues. It's just, there's a difference between someone asking you to offer your unique perspective on a nuanced issue and someone asking you to be a token.
And if you're asking someone to offer their unique cultural perspective on something, understand that there should be some sensitivity in that ask and not just "We need a Native American to talk for the Thanksgiving episode."
