The last paper for this year's writing class asks students to try to change a hostile audience's mind. They are so much fun to read.
I've got arguments trying to convince InfoWars readers that climate change is real, committed socialists that capitalism is good, and readers of the Federalist that they should support gun control.
Students also write a meta-analysis explaining their persuasive choices given their research into their audience and the reading we've done over the semester about facts, values, and persuasion.
Their meta-analyses show how well they understand the difficulty of their task, and that they've made some smart and thoughtful choices about how to argue in good faith and establish common ground with audiences they disagree with.
If I'm going to be reading papers three days before Thanksgiving, at least I'm having a good time doing it.
