I’ve come across several interesting state statutes while researching abortion, feticide, homicide, disposal of remains, child support, personhood, etc., & decided to share on a thread. Depending on your views on issues, these may cause a chuckle, shock, or satisfaction. Enjoy:
Iowa has a fetal homicide law relating to an unintentional death while drag racing.
In Kentucky, 1st degree fetal homicide is a capital offense.
In Louisiana, killing a child during delivery can carry the sentence of hard labor for life.
The landlocked state of Oklahoma has a statute for granting permits for burial at sea.
In Hawaii, a fetus in the 3rd trimester is vested with full personhood.
Missouri declared in 1987 that human life begins at conception & that state laws should be interpreted as such. SCOTUS later refused to hear a challenge to this “value judgment” in Webster v. Reproductive Health Services (109 S.Ct. 3040), since it did not directly ban abortions.
