So #UCUstrikes @ucu are starting today.
I am fully on board with the reasons for the strikes however in my first year of uni the strikes caused a lot of distress that lingered for a couple of weeks as an autistic student.
Here is my thread of how to strike and make it easier

First off shouldnt have to be said but always ensure if you are near an entrance it isn't blocked and that also it isn't blocked for a wheelchair user or anyone who may need access to a ramp ect. Do not block accessibility entrances either

Don't give leaflets out unless people want to take them. My campus was littered with them last time. Not really a disability issue but an environmental one.

Also it was very uncomfortable having bits of paper waved at me by people I didn't know. Always is.

Call out to people rather than shout.
Trust me there is a different. One is overload inducing one is not as much.
Do it once. People may not want to engage with you for any reason. Don't make it feel like you cannot get away.

If using a megaphone.
Do you have to? Are your banners and signs not enough?
If you for some reason like the echoy sensory nightmares don't have it loud enough for all of campus to hear. Some of us are trying escaping meltdowns when we see one.

I'm saying it again do not block entrances. Always allow for a way for people to enter the building without having to interact with you.
This means accessibile ones too and leaving enough room for wheelchairs, scooters ect.

I'll probably think of more especially as I am braving campus today because systematic reviews don't write themselves.
So just be considerate of disabled students and not dusting campus with leaflets.
Many are in support of you just I support no meltdowns more

Obviously not everyone is like this. Most of this is from what I experienced at Liverpool Uni.

But yeah, my lecturers work hard and have made university an amazing experience. So I do support the strike.
I also did a short thread on tips for other autistic students to help make this time easier. Simply things I do but hopefully it may help another
