In sci-fi does it ever seem like the characters wear a lot of either leather or ripped cloth, and everything is in an angular-patchwork shape language?

but I mean
why

Do sci-fi ppl not create textiles? Are there no raw materials with which to weave??? What are the dyestuffs??!
if sci-fi characters have lived in this dystopian space port for generations

where
are
the
f o l k
a r t
T E X T I L E P A T T E R N S

that tell the secret stories the poor pass down from GEN TO GEN??

WOULDNT THEY HAVE DEVELOPED DYES AND PATTERNS THAT REFLECT THEIR STORIES??
And you KNOW there’d be secret “fuck you” patterns they’d develop, to wear in plain sight, as a silent “fuck you, you haven’t crushed me yet” to the wealthy bastards in power??
Even if they had access to two colors, they can knit some very easily readable visuals?? Even 1 color they can make shit to tell their stories??

OH NO IM MORE BOTHERED BY THIS THAN I HAD REALIZED
I get the idea that angular patchwork looks “harsh” maybe? Or like we’ve collectively decided science fiction=cold and angular.

But in the cold dead of space, inches from your bedroom window in the belly of the dying ship you live on wouldn’t you crave warmth?
Wouldn’t you maintain the human(oid) desire for the psychological closeness sparked by wearing or SEEING a pattern from your infancy?? Or from your home culture? Or the culture you’ve become a part of? A sign of “membership”? BELONGING!?
anyway
I bought some yarn today and my toes are cold and I’m thinking a LOT ABOUT PATTERNS and I’m

GONNA
learn how to knit, dammit!
ok ok ok OK
this is not a great photograph, but I’m learning the German Twisted Cast On method, but you can’t see my cool and great progress because, like a dummy, I chose multi-colored tiny yarn for my very first project 😫

(I shall remedy this w/ more appropriate yarns later)
Also I’m using a magic loop(?) and I don’t understand what I’m doing I just do what the lady in the video tells me to do 😭

Also what is purl??
Back to sci-fi!
you don’t necessarily need space sheep, or other natural materials, for your space knitting

I mean, go to the craft store this instant, most of the yarn is acrylic (petroleum product)

wouldn’t sci-fi ppl be able to make fibers out of garbage or oil, like we do?
