GJ being self-centered doesn't make him a bad person or stop him from having connections with other ppl or caring about things - both can be true. He's aware of his flaws and he's trying to correct them: his hyper individualism is a reflection of the system he wants to dismantle. https://twitter.com/BASEDPlRATE/status/1198727237153034241
So it's a mistake to assume people are being reductive about his character if they say he's conceited or w/e. Like, the narrative is pretty explicit about Gojou's tendency to fold in and rely on himself alone - his superiors say it, his peers say it, his students say it...
Getou is the person who understands him best, and Getou's entire plan is predicated on that.
He can't help it, he's a product of a system that values him for his ability - he's a victim of the expectations placed upon.

And he WILL give in to it, esp in battle, bc that's what he's always done - he can't magically change that, it's smth he has to do gradually.
We've already seen it happen with Toji - his face changes, he's weightless, he becomes... euphoric. He, alone, is the honoured one.

The same thing is going to happen in Shibuya - he'll succumb to the euphoria and he'll be punished for it; the great Gojou will be sealed. That's why it's called a fatal flaw.
The fact that GJ recognises his behaviour is a problem is part of what makes him a great character and an interesting mentor tho. We focus on how Riko's situation ultimately affected Getou's relationship with jujutsu society but GJ's own relationship with is equally important.
Like Getou, he witnessed the injustice and the waste of life. He was the one who suggested wiping the association out in the first place; he can understand precisely why Getou surrendered to radicalism, and he wants to overhaul the status quo in a different way.
But he knows that he can't accomplish that with strength alone - he said so himself. He could unilaterally wipe out all of the social elite but they'll only be replaced by people who believe the same thing.
Long-term change will require people who think differently and have a like-minded community with whom they can build a better system.
THAT is what Gojou wants - a society that's better than before. People who are better than him. That's why he wants his students to surpass him; not match him.
