As promised, some interiors from the 4 issue Batman series, 10 Nights of the Beast - Starlin, Aparo, DeCarlo, Roy and Costanza, in Batman 417-420
Shout out to Adrienne Roy here, colorists get forgotten in modern comic appreciation, but Roy is consistently good. The color washing in these panels is lovely
I talk a lot about action art and sequencing, here Aparo shows you how it is done, tracking Batman through every step of a fall from a building. Budding artists, take note!
Aparo is a master of body positioning, he draws characters reacting to blows in such a way as to convey the strength of the blow. Check, for example, panel 6, both the Beast’s kick and Batman’s body reacting to it are perfect.
Another rooftop chase sequence, another opportunity for Aparo to take your breath away. Just for fun look for shadows here, Aparo was meticulous about keeping track of lighting and showing cast shadows, many artists forget this.
This is another of Aparo’s signature panels, “the Aparo explosion”, such a powerful shot, it comes off the page and right at you
Check how the shading and color mix on these pages, one blends into the other, I’m not sure if that’s all Roy or Roy and DeCarlo, but it’s terrific
When I first read this it shocked me, this Beast Guy was the real deal! Starlin knows how to turn it up to 11
End of the day this is what I’m paying for, I love a good combat sequence, and Aparo is the business. He knows when to zoom in, where to focus and how to build the drama. The silhouettes on pg 3 are a great example.
