Women clashing with other women. Here’s something I’ve noticed after working in this industry for 10 years, but it was also apparent when I studied games: sometime you run into other women who have a hard time working with women. I’ve tried to understand why. Thread

More than once I’ve encountered female devs who have treated me very differently than our male colleagues. It’s always made me a bit sad :/ When asked about their behavior they have sometimes (after 2 glasses of wine) said “they always had a hard time connecting w/ other women.”
“You are not at all like I thought you would be...you are, like, nice!!” Is something I’ve heard more than once. I have a theory about this.
A lot of women making games today grew up playing games as girls. I did. And games were strongly considered a “hobby for boys”.

This meant other girls sometimes thought you were weird, or even bullied you. So you had mostly guy friends (or no close friends) and maybe came to associated other women as bullies :( Or never found somebody who shared your non-girly interests.
Then these girls who grew up playing games grew up and became game devs, and they are often the only woman in their team at work, which sometimes subconsciously becomes part of the self-image. So when another woman enters the group that is seen as a threat.
This mix of not having had the chance to form healthy friendships with other girls, and getting your self-image challenged is sometimes a bad mix.
The good thing is that I’ve seen this get a lot better, as more women and more women enter the industry, and fewer women have to carry the burden of being the only woman on the team <3 When I started in 2009 we were 10%, now it’s soon 20%, in Sweden.
But hey, I could be totally wrong ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ Happy to get to work with so many amazing women @UbiMassive!
