With Christmas on the horizon and Black Friday next week, my feed (and I'm guessing yours too) is starting to fill with more posts about supporting small and local businesses.

(This is my #antimlmmovement thread)
This is brilliant for those people running their own business, selling a product or service they've created themselves, or who have a shop selling items. Go forth & spend freely with these businesses! You'll get unique products & great customer service đź‘Ś
However, if you see a post from an MLM (multi-level marketing) business can I urge you to think twice? MLM is NOT a small business.

It's a business that involves being a rep for a very large, in many cases multi-million-pound company.
It's a business that the rep has to pay to join, which makes the rep the customer.

It's a business where it's mathematically impossible for everyone to make a profit.
It's a business where it's been proven that 99.6% of people who sign up either make no money or actually lose money.

It's a business that often targets new mums as potential recruits, knowing full well they're unlikely to end up in the 0.4%
It's a business that encourages reps to guilt trip their friends into buying overpriced products (everyone in the pyramid needs to take their cut).
It's a business where people who've made the decision to leave often don't talk about their experience because they're embarrassed or ashamed of the claims they made when they joined, or the money they lost (they shouldn't be, the more people who tell their story, the better)
You believe you're helping out a friend by making a purchase from them. What you're really doing is giving them false hope. Then they'll either plough more money or time into what will certainly fail.
They'll believe it's their fault, but it absolutely isn't. They were always set up to fail, they just didn't realise.

It's impossible for everybody to succeed in any company set up as an MLM. Study their income disclosure statements, they tell you that themselves.
There's lots more information about the truths of MLM out there. You can read brilliantly researched articles over at @TalentedLadies or listen to the @SLMLMbutok Podcast. @ElleBeauBlog shared her Younique story and The @AntiMLMwriters blog is worth reading.
Please support small businesses, but remember MLM is NOT small business.
