With Christmas on the horizon and Black Friday next week, my feed (and I& #39;m guessing yours too) is starting to fill with more posts about supporting small and local businesses.

This is brilliant for those people running their own business, selling a product or service they& #39;ve created themselves, or who have a shop selling items. Go forth & spend freely with these businesses! You& #39;ll get unique products & great customer service

However, if you see a post from an MLM (multi-level marketing) business can I urge you to think twice? MLM is NOT a small business.
It& #39;s a business that involves being a rep for a very large, in many cases multi-million-pound company.
It& #39;s a business that involves being a rep for a very large, in many cases multi-million-pound company.
It& #39;s a business that the rep has to pay to join, which makes the rep the customer.
It& #39;s a business where it& #39;s mathematically impossible for everyone to make a profit.
It& #39;s a business where it& #39;s mathematically impossible for everyone to make a profit.
It& #39;s a business where it& #39;s been proven that 99.6% of people who sign up either make no money or actually lose money.
It& #39;s a business that often targets new mums as potential recruits, knowing full well they& #39;re unlikely to end up in the 0.4%
It& #39;s a business that often targets new mums as potential recruits, knowing full well they& #39;re unlikely to end up in the 0.4%
It& #39;s a business that encourages reps to guilt trip their friends into buying overpriced products (everyone in the pyramid needs to take their cut).
It& #39;s a business where people who& #39;ve made the decision to leave often don& #39;t talk about their experience because they& #39;re embarrassed or ashamed of the claims they made when they joined, or the money they lost (they shouldn& #39;t be, the more people who tell their story, the better)
You believe you& #39;re helping out a friend by making a purchase from them. What you& #39;re really doing is giving them false hope. Then they& #39;ll either plough more money or time into what will certainly fail.
They& #39;ll believe it& #39;s their fault, but it absolutely isn& #39;t. They were always set up to fail, they just didn& #39;t realise.
It& #39;s impossible for everybody to succeed in any company set up as an MLM. Study their income disclosure statements, they tell you that themselves.

There& #39;s lots more information about the truths of MLM out there. You can read brilliantly researched articles over at @TalentedLadies or listen to the @SLMLMbutok Podcast. @ElleBeauBlog shared her Younique story and The @AntiMLMwriters blog is worth reading.
Please support small businesses, but remember MLM is NOT small business.
