People who know my deep concerns about Trump often ask why I’d work to defeat him from within the GOP, instead of washing my hands of the party. It’s not because I have any affinity for one party—it’s because I fear if no one challenges Trump from within, the GOP will become an
amorphous blob of deeply rooted curruption, white nationalism, betrayal of our allies, etc. The structural hold the GOP will continue to have on our elections and government makes that very dangerous, not just for GOP voters but for our country overall.
I also believe voters who supported Trump in ‘16 *can* be persuaded there is a better way forward if we can remind them are that conservative policy ideas, when not accompanied by Trump’s brand of vile hatred, will get a fair hearing in public discourse. I *have* to believe that.
