Jaxson Hayes thread
Right now Hayes is relying on his otherworldly athleticism but there are some simple ways to get him going. We know he has great hands and can outpace and outleap most defenders his size. So why not employ the high pick and roll?
The benefits of his athleticism aren't limited to the paint. He has the quickness/size to race up in transition and get into position to create offense for others with a simple on-ball screen. The 5 will be hesitant to help for risk of the dive against the more athletic player.
Here we see another benefit of Hayes' foot speed in transition and three defenders collapse around him as he charges toward the basket leaving the open look for Brandon Ingram.
In another split action that Alvin Gentry probably brought from his time in Golden State, Jaxson Hayes sets a flare screen and dives to the basket creating space for JJ Redick which then results in an open look for Brandon Ingram.
The Pelicans aren't trusting Hayes with the ball other than as a finisher but these are some ways he can be effective early in his career. Gradually, he will graduate to the Andrew Bogut role in the offense and perhaps beyond.
