Why the Tories win among the average British public - an observation.
In the course of my social media expertise (yes, someone actually pays me to do this shit), I find that an online article saying ‘company/person has done good thing’ will drive MASSIVE engagement, all comments saying ‘bravo - more companies/people should do this’.
However, a similar post saying ‘how YOU can help company/person do good thing’ will die the death of being ignored.
The average person is very passive and largely selfish when it comes to helping beyond their own immediate circle. They like the promise of good things happening but fuck NO are they going to be inconvenienced assisting.
The public like getting vocally upset at David Attenborough telling us how plastic straws choke baby turtles BUT these same people furiously resent the inconvenience of a paper straw with their McDonald’s shake.
Parties saying “looks guys, we’re going to have to make some adjustments, it may be a bit uncomfortable but it will ultimately help other people” will always lose to the one saying “we promise great big things but don’t worry, you don’t have to get your hands dirty”.
Brits just wanna have their plastic Maccy D straws. 🤷🏼‍♀️
