I had a very great time at my second #ASLH2019 this year, and felt more emboldened by the interdisciplinary work I saw throughout the panels and by meeting both old and new scholars alike. A few highlights:
I really enjoy Author-Meets-Reader panels (I hope SCMS does this) and I attended the one on Sarah Seo’s book on the emergence of car culture and the 4th Amendment. The conversation really engaged how to do an object-oriented history that never leaves behind humans. #ASLH2019
Really loved @jlgrisinger’s panel on Teaching Legal History and the panelists all addressed various issues of not just the nuts and bolts but also the politics of the classroom. #ASLH2019
In particular, @awmerck gave me a ton of advice at dinner the night before about preparing to teach a law-oriented history class and her thoughts on the panel about teaching the administrative state were helpful and now we’ve been buddies through two conferences! #ASLH2019
The group of feminist legal biographers put together and discussing their books was an absolute delight. I hope to take of Constance Bachaus’s challenge to bring in ideas of whiteness and maleness into my work when it’s so evident that it is part of the story. #ASLH2019
The final panel on labor and civil liberators highlighted some excellent still early work looking at the odd splits in elements of the labor movement as either the properties changed (4th vs 1st Amend) or the rules of the actual lawyers changed. #ASLH2019
And finally have to thank those who came to my own panel, especially my fascinating co-panelists work on Cause Lawyering in issues of slavery and race, and especially @KaraWSwanson’s thoughtful responses. @awmerck provides a recap: https://twitter.com/awmerck/status/1198473295823278080
Overall, I had a great time and thanks to everyone who made someone who felt once entirely outside the bubble of this discipline feel like I belonged! #ASLH2019
