Here's a thread of presentations by members of Winnipeg Police Cause Harm and other anti-police advocates at the Winnipeg Police Board meeting yesterday afternoon.
First up was Kevin Walby, an associate professor of criminal justice at the University of Winnipeg. The camera showing the speaker wasn't set up for his presentation so you can only see board members (police chief is in the white uniform on the top left).
Next was Nathan Loewen, a member of Winnipeg Police Cause Harm. He wore a shirt displaying the names of the people killed by Winnipeg Police in 2019, as well as blank spaces for those whose names have not been released by police.
Next was Esther Wolfe, who spoke about the experience of living in downtown Winnipeg for a year and witnessing multiple incidents of police violence against unhoused and Indigenous people.
Following that was James Wilt, another member of WPCH, who also wore a shirt listing the names of those killed by police and spoke about the shooting of a 16-year-old boy by Winnipeg Police at a 7/11 the evening before.
Next was Silas Koulack, who addressed some of the history of policing and how it comes with incredible social and financial costs compared to alternatives.
Finally, there was Allen Mankewich, who spoke critically of policing from a disability justice perspective as well as his experience of living downtown and witnessing increasing securitization.
Please watch/share these presentations for perspectives on why funding police is a terrible response to social crises like poverty, mental illness, substance use issues and lack of housing. Our group and allies made our points very clearly – and this action is only the beginning.
