Some thoughts/brief summaries on the panel at #ABCT2019 on digital tech + personalization + citizen science + mental health
Both @steveschueller and @draguilera point out tech companies have mastered how to make "big" changes (e.g., Facebook news feed), having people complain, and still retaining users
We need to figure out how to retain participants in digital mental health interventions (Me: even when asking them for big changes in their lives) in a similar way
Dr. Naomi Pollock also reminds us we have to think about who the personalization models we're building are trained on
Me: The book "Invisible Women" by @CCriadoPerez is a fantastic deep dive on these data gaps of our algorithms, especially in the context of gender

One way to make this happen is to start much smaller than we typically do
Me: Also do *a lot* of quality testing, and have our null hypothesis be that our algorithms will be biased and actively work to reduce it, rather than assuming things are fine until shown otherwise

Now @steveschueller asks what citizen science is!
Dr. Lauren Rutter says it's individuals from all over who want to learn more about themselves and others. It can be a buzzword, but we shouldn't underrate it's possibility to be a helpful part of the process

Lots of laughs from the audience when panelists/ moderator talk about being asked whether they're trying to replace therapists
Me: Unfortunately there's more than enough suffering in the world, we need every solid, evidence-based tool we can get, very much including therapists

Me: But face to face therapy just literally cannot scale up to address the mental health care needs on anything sooner than a geologic timescale
We need face to face therapy AND new structures that are well-tailored to improve people's mental health
