When I was 20 weeks pregnant with my son, the NHS sonographer noticed on my routine scan that he had a cleft lip. They immediately sent me to a 4D scan the next day to confirm the cleft.
Once it was confirmed I was immediately put in the care of CLAPA a FREE charity who help council parents with the shock of the diagnosis and arrange for the operation when the baby is born. A CLAPA nurse named heather was assigned to me and she had visited my house within a day
I worked closely with heather throughout my pregnancy and she made me feel so reassured it would all be alright. She even visited Joseph the day he was born.
After that Joseph was put under an IMMIGRANT consultant at Alder Hey who now sees him every 1-3 years at Alder Hey, along with an orthodontist, psychiatrist and whole team of dedicated people. They did an amazing job with his operation as well
I’m a single parent of 3 kids who works 16 hours a week and I’m skint. If you think I could afford any kind of insurance premium that would cover all the care Joseph and myself received the last 7 years you’d be wrong. We absolutely HAVE to protect our NHS
