hello I made an infographic thing about the election. it isn’t about who to vote for, just about how an election actually works and where your vote goes. the system is [intentionally] complicated so I thought I’d make it easy. 10 slides so see next 2 tweets for the full thing!
in the 2017 general election, the SNP won the east fife constituency by TWO VOTES!!!!! labour won kensington by 20!! and the tories won richmond park by 45! there are probs 45 ppl on your street alone that aren’t registered to vote. nag ur siblings & pals in the group chat!!!!
also if you’re studying away from home at uni, you can register to vote in both places - you can’t vote twice, but you can be registered in both to play it by ear n see which constituency your vote is more likely to count in!
also reminder that unsentenced ppl in the prison system *can* vote - that includes both unconvicted and convicted but not yet sentenced. staff need to provide forms to anyone who requests it n needs to be sent off ASAP!
if you have no fixed address you can register at an address you lived in the past, somewhere you spend lots of time (a day centre/night shelter), a friend’s address, or a public address that you’ll be able to collect your polling card/postal vote from!!
you can also apply to vote anonymously (although I don’t think it’s easy) via the electoral commission, which ensures your name isn’t added to the open/electoral register. women’s aid have a guide on their website for survivors to register if they can/are willing.
there are so many ways ppl are prevented from exercising their right to vote & the law leaves so many disenfranchised. if ur not one of these ppl, and the only thing stopping you is forgetting, or thinking it doesn’t matter, pleeeeease take 5 mins now! https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
